In a concerted effort to bolster environmental awareness, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC), in collaboration with Al Meera Consumer Goods Company and Monoprix, hosted a series of educational activities to commemorate International Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3. This initiative is part of Qatar’s broader goal to promote sustainability and foster community engagement in protecting the environment.

The day’s events included environmental and cultural competitions designed to engage visitors and raise awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution. To incentivize participation, Al Meera and Monoprix contributed shopping vouchers with a total value of QAR 10,000, which were awarded to winners of the competitions. An awareness booth was also established, where attendees could access brochures and discover eco-friendly alternatives to traditional plastic bags.

During the event, Yousef Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs at MOECC, reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to ongoing awareness campaigns and environmental initiatives that align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. “We have adopted comprehensive policies targeting various segments of society to enhance awareness of the environmental and health risks associated with plastic use,” Al Hammadi stated, emphasizing that these strategies are aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030.

Farhoud Al Hajri, Director of Public Relations and Communication at MOECC, elaborated on the purpose of the awareness activities, stating that they aim to inspire individuals to shift towards reusable bags while illustrating the adverse consequences of plastic bags on ecosystems. He underlined the importance of fostering partnerships between public and private sectors to support national environmental initiatives.
“Collaboration between government entities and businesses is crucial to amplify our message and effect change,” Al Hajri noted.
