Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Urges Collective Action for a Cleaner Environment

In a heartfelt message marking World Environment Day, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called for collaborative efforts to secure a prosperous and ecologically sustainable future for Bangladesh. This year, the celebration of this globally recognized event will take place on June 25, due to the original date, June 5, coinciding with the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

A Global Call to Action

Bangladesh

World Environment Day serves as a platform for raising awareness about environmental protection. Yunus emphasized the importance of public engagement in safeguarding the environment during this year’s observance. “This day is celebrated not only in Bangladesh but around the world to enhance awareness about environmental conservation,” he stated.

The theme for this year, set by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), focuses on “Ending Plastic Pollution,” highlighting the urgent necessity to combat plastic waste. Yunus articulated the significance of this theme, declaring, “No more plastic pollution” reflects the dire state of our environment caused by excessive plastic use.

The Impact of Plastic Pollution

Bangladesh

Yunus pointed out the alarming rise in plastic consumption over recent decades, noting that the unchecked production and use of single-use plastics have wreaked havoc on the environment. “The versatile and uncontrolled use of plastic products poses terrible damage to ecological systems,” he said, stressing that strict measures are essential for protecting both the environment and public health.

In response to the escalating plastic crisis, Yunus outlined several initiatives undertaken by the government aimed at controlling plastic pollution. Regular monitoring activities are being conducted nationwide to curb the production and usage of plastic shopping bags. Furthermore, special projects focus on developing and introducing environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional polythene bags.

Government Initiatives Against Plastic Waste

Bangladesh

To tackle transboundary plastic pollution, the government is implementing projects aimed at proper management of plastic waste and marine litter. Additionally, work is underway to establish Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines under the ‘Solid Waste Management Rules, 2021’. This regulation mandates producers to take responsibility for collecting and managing plastic waste generated from their products.

Protecting Biodiversity in Bangladesh

Yunus also expressed concern over the critical environmental status of many regions in Bangladesh, which is known for its natural beauty. He specifically highlighted the need for conservation efforts on St. Martin Island, Bangladesh’s only coral island. “Initiatives are already in place to protect and restore its biodiversity by limiting tourism and creating alternative employment opportunities for local residents,” he noted.

He urged all citizens to participate in these government initiatives to ensure the successful implementation of strategies aimed at preserving the fragile ecosystem of St. Martin Island.

A Future Commitment to Environmental Protection

As World Environment Day approaches, Yunus expressed his hopes for the success of all programs commemorating the occasion. His message resonates with the understanding that collective action is crucial for combating environmental challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

In summary, Yunus’s address underscores the pressing need for coordinated efforts among individuals and communities to build a cleaner, greener Bangladesh, while protecting its rich biodiversity.
