As Shark Week approaches, starting July 20 on the Discovery Channel, Stop & Shop is getting into the spirit of the oceanic celebration by introducing a unique initiative. The grocery store chain will unveil limited-edition shark-themed shopping bags at 17 select locations across Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.
Free Bags with a Purchase

Beginning on July 7, customers can snag one of these eye-catching bags for free with any purchase of $35 or more, while supplies last. These bags, measuring 21 ¾ inches by 14 ½ inches by 13 ¾ inches, not only pay tribute to Cape Cod’s renowned marine life but also feature well-known landmarks from the region and its surrounding islands. They are designed to conveniently carry groceries or beach essentials.
Promoting Shark Education
In addition to being a practical item for shoppers, the bags also contain a QR code that links to valuable resources from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC). This organization is dedicated to providing educational information about white sharks in the Northwest Atlantic. Highlighting their commitment, Stop & Shop will also donate $10,000 to AWSC to bolster its initiatives in shark education, research, and public safety.
Local Insight and Community Engagement
“We’re excited to offer these bags as a fun way to celebrate the summer season on the Cape and Islands,” said Ben Feller, district director at Stop & Shop. He emphasized the importance of providing customers easy access to the AWSC’s shark education resources. “I’ve lived and worked on Cape Cod my whole life, and this is a very busy but very special place during this time of year.”
The collaboration between Stop & Shop and AWSC aims to engage customers on the importance of shark conservation while they enjoy the summer activities that the region has to offer.
Partnership for Awareness
Cynthia Wigren, the CEO and co-founder of AWSC based in Chatham, Massachusetts, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Stop & Shop. “We’re thrilled to partner with Stop & Shop on this creative campaign that raises awareness about white shark research and public safety,” she stated. Wigren reiterated that summer is an opportune time to educate beachgoers and families about the crucial role white sharks play in the ocean ecosystem, as well as to encourage informed decisions while enjoying the waters.
The initiative not only highlights local marine wildlife but also fosters a sense of community and engagement through education. Shark Week promises to be an enriching experience for residents and tourists alike, and Stop & Shop’s contributions play a significant role in promoting awareness of shark safety and conservation.
As families prepare for summer adventures and vacations, the combination of educational resources and practical shopping bags represents a commitment to both customer experience and marine conservation.
